LAURA MEATON
Laura is a Cardiff-based movement director originally from the Wye Valley in South Wales. Passionate about bold, physical storytelling, she loves using movement to bring fresh perspectives to classical texts, reimagine traditional stories and create dynamic, visually engaging theatre (Under Milk Wood (Theatr Clwyd), Odyssey ’84, Iphigenia yn Sblot (Sherman Theatre).
Alongside her work on established texts, Laura has a real passion for new writing and developing original work. She is currently part of the creative team bringing the new musical You, Me and the Rest of the World to life, as well as working on a new sequel to A Christmas Carol. She relishes the opportunity to collaborate with other creatives, experiment with ideas and help shape a story from the ground up.
“The pace never falters, the characters live fully [..] despite there never being enough bodies at once, and the illusion of an entire town is sustained with remarkable ease. It is, quite simply, a beautifully realised piece”
Laura also leads masterclasses for professionals and students, including at Studio Clwyd, exploring how physical choices can bring text to life and help performers make bold, confident and compelling creative decisions.
Inclusivity sits at the heart of Laura’s practice. She is passionate about making movement accessible, celebrating different bodies and ways of moving, and creating collaborative environments where performers feel valued, supported and empowered to contribute. She is also developing her practice in intimacy direction, building on her movement background to support storytelling that is playful, purposeful and respectful, with performers’ boundaries, agency and wellbeing at its heart.
A Welsh language learner with a genuine love for the language, Laura is excited to continue developing her skills and to connect with Welsh-language theatre and audiences in new ways.
“She threw her energy, creativity and commitment into the room and I was therefore able to work with her in a way that made me confident in my ability and body...Laura understood [my] anxiety and focussed the shoot in a more helpful direction, focussing on playing games with the camera and dancing alongside Laura who was off camera which ultimately got me out of my head and move in a natural, relaxed but confident way.”
